What it’s about

 

English Language iTutoring (ELiT) was founded in 2015 to commercialise Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning technology developed within the University of Cambridge to help students learn English as a foreign language. Our first product, Write & Improve was launched in 2016, followed by Speak & Improve in 2018. Since launch, we have received over 8 million submissions from more than a million unique users.

ELiT was recently acquired by Cambridge Assessment English and Cambridge University Press, and we are looking for an ELiT Director to ensure that the post-acquisition integration is successful, grow the team, and expand the product portfolio.

The ELiT Director will lead us as we grow into an AI and product development centre of excellence as part of a joint set of digital capabilities across Cambridge.

 

What you’ll be doing

 

  • Member of the ELiT Board, and other governance structures relevant to the machine learning eco-system that surrounds ELiT.
  • Represent and evangelise ELiT within Cambridge Assessment English, Cambridge University Press, and the broader University.
  • Lead ELiT’s technical strategy.
  • Develop and maintain a prioritised roadmap for ELiT technical development.
  • Develop and implement a growth strategy to increase ELiT’s capacity in key areas, such as large-scale data annotation and software development.
  • Ensure that ELiT continues to develop as a great and enriching place to work.
  • Build a team that can work with academic researchers specialising in the application of NLP, speech, dialogue, and multimodal processing algorithms for automated scoring and feedback capabilities.
  • Fulfill the legal and statutory obligations of a UK legal entity.

 

What we’re looking for

 

  • The role requires strong networking and interpersonal skills with ability to build positive working relationships and foster collaboration across culturally diverse groups.
  • A background in software development is essential, as is an understanding of healthy engineering culture and process.
  • The successful candidate is likely to have a big-company background, as understanding and negotiating large company processes is a key element of the role. But they also need to appreciate and be able to sustain and nurture the existing startup-style culture within ELiT
  • Demonstrable experience in a leadership position responsible for building, motivating and leading high performing development teams.
  • Experience with any of the following will be helpful, but not essential:
  • Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning technology.
  • English language teaching and assessment.
  • Working within or in collaboration with academic research organisations.
