What the job is about

As a Senior Research Manager you will join a well-respected and diverse research team, and will find many exciting opportunities for professional development. You will identify and conduct to high scientific and technical standards a range of research activities related to examinations, products and services offered by Cambridge Assessment English. Key areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, language assessment, test validation, integrating language learning and assessment (with particular focus on the role of feedback), and quantitative or mixed methods data analysis techniques.  As a Senior Research Manager you will also engage with a wide range of audiences to showcase Cambridge Assessment English research and expertise. 

 

What you’ll be doing

We have two open posts – Post A and Post B –which have both shared and distinct accountabilities. Post A will have a predominant focus on IELTS, Post B will focus on learning oriented assessment and the role of feedback. Key principal accountabilities for both posts are:

  • Identify, in consultation with other business divisions, and conduct research which ensures that specific examinations/ products/ services and their associated features meet professional assessment standards and contribute to business objectives
  • Provide a research perspective on issues related to the development of specific exams, learning products, skill areas, technology areas or other areas of interest to the organization.
  • Develop robust quantitative research methodologies, implement research investigations of high scientific and technical standards and report upon the research investigations undertaken.
  • Assist in raising the academic profile of Cambridge Assessment English by publishing research and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, such as academics, teachers, admissions personnel and policy makers.
  • Plan work schedules, assign tasks and delegate responsibilities involved in research projects.

 

Specific  accountabilities include:

  • Identify and conduct research in the area of IELTS (Post A) or in the area of learning oriented assessment, using feedback to support learning and monitoring of learner progress (Post B), in order to support the growth and diversification of Cambridge Assessment English and its partners

 

What we’re looking for

 

Qualifications

  • Essential for Post A/desirable for Post B: PhD or EdD in a relevant field, e.g. language assessment, applied linguistics, educational measurement or related field.  Applicants near PhD/EdD completion or with a Master’s degree will be considered as well.

 

Skills

  • Strong quantitative and/or mixed methods research skills
  • Sound understanding of language assessment and test validation (Post A)
  • Sound understanding of learning oriented assessment and feedback(Post B)
  • Using data analysis software (e.g. SPSS, SAS, R, Python)
  • Effective written and oral communication skills to explain research and ideas to both specialist and non- specialist audiences
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and confidence in managing professional relationships, both internally in the organisation and externally
  • Ability to prioritise effectively

 

Experience

  • Developing robust research methodologies, implementing research investigations and reporting upon the research investigations undertaken
  • Previous experience with IELTS research (for Post A) or research on learning products (for Post B) would be beneficial
  • Planning and conducting large-scale research projects
  • Planning and conducting test validation projects
  • Using relevant data analysis software (e.g. SPSS, SAS, R, Python)
  • Writing effective reports and publications
  • Giving presentations to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • Managing projects, incl. planning work schedules, assigning tasks and delegating responsibilities involved in research projects
