What it’s about                    

The Research and Thought Leadership Group is looking for a Principal Research Manager to lead a range of research projects that apply cutting-edge Machine Learning technologies to products of English language assessment and learning.  You will also be responsible for providing consultancy and training to staff within the organization on machine learning and its applications in language education.

What you’ll be doing

You will join a team of language assessment experts and collaborate with colleagues across the organisation.  You will work closely with a group of machine learning experts from the Institute for Automated Language Teaching and Assessment (ALTA), of the University of Cambridge, to apply automated scoring technologies in assessment and learning offering.

  • Collaborate with the Principal Data Scientist in Validation and Data Services to develop and implement the organization’s strategy for Data Analytics.
  • Establish the design and performance objectives of automated assessment and learning systems.
  • Provide consultancy and training across the organization in one or several of the following areas: Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Natural Language Processing (NLP), automatic test generation, constructing user profiles, data management, and security.
  • Liaise with test development teams and the researchers at the ALTA institute to investigate and resolve operational problems in existing automated speaking and writing assessment.
  • Develop research methodology, implements and reports upon research investigations on the further improvement of the existing auto-markers, including developing new scoring features and automated diagnostic feedback products and services.
  • Design and implement the Cambridge English automated scoring research agenda. Plan project schedule, assign tasks, and delegate responsibilities to the research team.
  • Monitor the standards of scientific and technical research on automated scoring and feedback.

What we’re looking for

  • A Master degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Information Engineering, Artificial Intelligence or a related discipline is required. A doctoral degree is preferred.
  • Coding proficiency in C, Python, R or Perl is required. Proficiency in Lua and Matlab is desirable.
  • At least two years of work experience related to machine learning is required.
  • Experience of working effectively in a cross-institutional research team.
  • Passion for applying machine learning technologies to education.
